Nicomaine Dei Capili Mendoza, popularly known as Maine Mendoza or Yaya Dub (born March 3, 1995 in Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines), is a Filipina internet celebrity, comedienne, television personality and actress.
She is best known for her viral Dubsmash videos and her role as Yaya Dub in the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga!'s Kalyeserye segment airing on GMA Network and worldwide via GMA Pinoy TV. After Mendoza was accidentally paired with Alden Richards forming the love team AlDub, the ratings of Eat Bulaga! were further increased and Mendoza as well as Richards' popularity that is often describe as phenomenal.
Early life
Mendoza was born and raised in the municipality of Santa Maria in the province of Bulacan in the Philippines to Mary Ann and Teodoro Mendoza. She has two brothers and two sisters. All of the names of her siblings start with "Nico" (Nicolette Ann, Nicoleen Dyann, Nicolas Dynn and Nicodeim Dean).
She finished her elementary education at St. Paul School of Sta. Maria and high school at St. Paul College of Bocaue. She completed a bachelor's degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management major in Culinary Arts at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. She had her on-the-job training for her profession at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, New York.
Career
Acting career
In the early part of 2015, Mendoza's career took off after she began posting Dubsmash compilation on Facebook. A compilation in which she impersonates Kris Aquino went viral with one million views overnight. This earned her the title "Queen of Dubsmash" in the Philippines and opened several opportunities for Mendoza. She had the opportunity to collaborate with many other Dubsmashers and meet Kris Aquino herself. Subsequently, she was casted as Yaya Dub, the maid of Lola Nidora (portrayed by Wally Bayola), on Eat Bulaga!'s "Juan For All, All For Juan" segment and first apperared on July 4, 2015. Mendoza's character, Yaya Dub, is paired accidentally with fellow Eat Bulaga! co-host Alden Richards, on July 16, 2015, in a rom-com sketch part of the show titled Kalyeserye; the couple became popularly known as "AlDub". In November 2015, Mendoza joined the cast of Princess in the Palace as Chef Elize becoming her first appearance in an actual teleserye.
Mendoza and Richards are set to appear in a 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival entry entitled My Bebe Love. The film stars Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai de las Alas and directed by Jose Javier Reyes. Reyes confirmed the inclusion of Mendoza in the motion picture through an Instagram post. This is Mendoza's film debut and she plays as Anna Carillo, the stubborn and rebellious child of Vic Sotto's character.
GMA Network President and COO Gilberto Duavit announced that there are television projects and other plans in discussion for Mendoza and her onscreen partner Richards at GMA-7 that will be revealed soon. In the meantime, they are set to appear in GMA-7's station ID commercial for Christmas. Even though she appears in GMA, she is not a member of the GMA Artist Center according to Mendoza's ask.fm account. Her career is being managed by Triple A, the talent management arm of Antonio Tuviera who is the executive producer of Eat Bulaga!
Modeling and endorsements
Mendoza and Richards became the ambassadors of McDonald's and they appeared in their first television commercial on September 11, 2015. In the latter part of 2015, the couple appeared on other television commercials for Talk 'N Text, Zonrox Plus Thick Bleach, and Nestlé's Bear Brand Adult Plus, Coca Cola, Hapee Toothpaste, Belo Medical Group, and Downy. Mendoza also appeared in advertisements for O+ USA with Wally Bayola as Lola Nidora endorsing a smartphone and for Century Pacific Food's 555 Sardines.
Mendoza appeared as the cover girl for Meg magazine and Preview magazine for November 2015. Mendoza and the cast of Kalyeserye segment was featured on YES! magazine's November 2015 issue. Mendoza and Richards are set to be on the cover of Reader's Digest Asia in December 2015.
Other ventures
Humanitarian causes
Mendoza is a supporter of the causes of the Lumads in Mindanao, who experienced expulsion from their lands, persecution, and killings. Her brother-in-law John Carlos Catalan is a member of the group AlDub for Lumad, which supported a caravan by Lumad leaders in Surigao City. Brigadier General Joey Kakilala, commander of the Civil Relations Office of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, criticized Mendoza and other celebrities on supporting the Lumads saying that they do not know the real story behind the Lumads' cause and are being misled. Mendoza is yet to respond to the issue.
Reception
In October 2015, Maine's Twitter account became the third fastest growing profile after Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Her followers increased to 1,094,813 in just a few months. In November 2015, her popularity in Twitter was taken advantage by a group of hackers who identified themselves as Anonymous Philippines. The said group hacked Maine's official Twitter account and posted series of tweets promoting the Million Mask March. Despite hacking the account, they promised to return it to the rightful owner. In less than 24 hours, Maine was able to get hold of her social media accounts.
